Some reasons why I can’t find the time.

I keep on having aspirations to post all sorts of long and thoughtful thoughts on this here blog, but the time keeps on slipping away. Here are a few of the things keeping me busy:

1. Work, and thoughts and research about work-related stuff.
2. Cutting up carrots, doing dishes, and cooking chicken.
3. Getting the oil changed.
4. Cleaning my desk.
5. Working on my taxes.
6. sleeping in.
7. going to bed before midnight.

There is time on the horizon though don’t you worry. And I have this feeling that when I do post again, you’ll be there. Now that is a comforting thought.

Antsy update, Tagging, and finding noteworthy

I got antsy again and updated my blog layout. It looks mostly the same and I hope you enjoy that, but I had to update to the new K2 just cause I could.
I spent the last half hour updating the tags on my previous post, starting at number one and making it to number 61. I had to take a break there and I’ll do more another weekend. Hopefully it will make your browsing of the Tag Cloud below more enjoyable. At some point I’ll also try and condense the tags a bit also.

As I was doing the tagging I noticed a number of post I had written that had solicited a number of comments. Two series that got a lot of comments where: Consider Church and Thoughts on War. I’d recommend you read through some of those post and the comments because the comments are very insightful. Starting this week I’ll do my best to read through a couple of those post and comments and then try to respond to them. Let me know which ones your interested in.

I might change the layout of this page at some point, I hope my readers don’t mind, I’m sort of nutso like that.

My Notes from the Tipping Point

Great Book, I’d recommend it (My mom recommended it to me).

The Tipping Point

POINTS:

If you take a paper and have to fold it over on it self 50 times, it would make a stack tall enough to reach to the sun. (most would guess the size of a phone book.). pg. 11

Six-degrees of Seperation was actually a study. Sent packets to folks in Nebraska and they where to send it to someone, who sent it to someone, with the goal of reaching a lawyer in Boston. (Most people would guess 100).
We mostly have close friends (based on proximity over similarity) who share similar activities (not necessarily attitudes ). pg. 35
In the 6 degrees experiment most came through three individuals, it points to a small number of people knowing a great many people.

Roger Horchow. Tracks down old elementary school friends. Writes EVERYONE a Birthday card. He’s got 1,600 names in a computer database. pg. 45

Prison experiment
People turned horrible. In just 6 days they called it off. Fascinatingly scary. pg. 154.

Experiments on cheating. Much cheating goes on. It’s not necessarily the bad kids or anything like that. Lot’s of different circumstances. (155-158).

Innovators, Early Adopters, Early Majority, Late Majority, Laggards. pg. 197

Have you ever thought about community?

My good friend Dave Jones wrote an email in an effort to start gathering folks interested in conversation about community:

I’m including you in this email because you and I have had a conversation that went something like,

“Wouldn’t it be cool to live in some sort of radical community that is holistically Christ-focused?”

“Like a commune?”

“Maybe, something like that.”

“Yeah, that’d be awesome! . . . I think”

We are trying to create an ongoing conversation about community. Dave’s an amazing organizer and leader when it comes to things like this, I’m just a jump on the bandwagon sort of guy. Post a comment if you want to join in, or email me and I’ll forward you the email.

ideas keep me up at night

So, sometimes I have an idea and I can write it down and forget about it. Other times it keeps me up and so antsy I get kicked out of bed (actually encouraged lovingly to pursue my ideas; I love my wife). But sometimes I don’t know when to stop.

I had this idea to make a digg like site for articles and sites about fair trade and conscience consumerism. It seems like it would be a great way to keep things up-to-date and find relavent articles that suit people’s interest. So I found a clone of digg and tried to upload it. Turns out I can’t in a subdirectory so I went searching for a free webhost with mySql. No luck with that so two hours later I’m still where I started.

The idea still stands, but I’m going to have to wait till they update the web code before I can do it. Stay tuned.

Rent: Love and Life

I just saw a preview for the movie, Rent, which I had just seen for the first time last fall. Keane and I saw it on Broadway in New York. I’m not going to do a movie review or anything, but I did want to share a quick thought.

The catchy and great sounding main song, Seasons of Love, always brings to my mind the fragility of life and the importance of love. LOVE. If there is anything the gospel of Jesus teaches, it’s LOVE.

Writing for Geez Magazine

Though not to be confused with the popular rap artist, Young Jeezy, Geez Magazine is a little controversial.
It wasn’t until I received the first issue and started reading the Letters section that I realized the controversy of the title, Geez.

Using guttural language in connection with our Lord is not at all complimentary. In fact it is a cowardly and sinful act… Dan U. Dalke, Inman, Kansas

I had read this article, and thought Geez was just the word that we used growing up, not some attempt to blasphemy God. Needless to say I think they got some heads spinning.

I like Geez Magazine. Every article I’ve read so far has been thought provoking and to some degree challenging. I’d like to be a part of that, I’d like to write for Geez Magazine.
The problem is, I don’t know if I’m Geezy writing material. I don’t know if my style fits. I’m not quite sure where to start. I did write something and I’ll send it in, but it doesn’t have the sort of abstract flair that so much of the magazine is covered in. The stuff people read at a poetry gathering and everyone snaps their fingers. Any suggestions on me becoming a better writer?

Iconizing ourselves

At some point it’s going to become pretty normal to have a personal icon, just as most have a standard screen name/username these days. I decided I should come to a decision about what I’ll chose for a standard icon across multiple sites. Here are some current possiblities:

ariah and matt great B&W
in London
ariah climbing in Utah
ariah jumping on sand dune
in Mauritania Africa
