Have you ever thought about community?

My good friend Dave Jones wrote an email in an effort to start gathering folks interested in conversation about community:

I’m including you in this email because you and I have had a conversation that went something like,

“Wouldn’t it be cool to live in some sort of radical community that is holistically Christ-focused?”

“Like a commune?”

“Maybe, something like that.”

“Yeah, that’d be awesome! . . . I think”

We are trying to create an ongoing conversation about community. Dave’s an amazing organizer and leader when it comes to things like this, I’m just a jump on the bandwagon sort of guy. Post a comment if you want to join in, or email me and I’ll forward you the email.

ideas keep me up at night

So, sometimes I have an idea and I can write it down and forget about it. Other times it keeps me up and so antsy I get kicked out of bed (actually encouraged lovingly to pursue my ideas; I love my wife). But sometimes I don’t know when to stop.

I had this idea to make a digg like site for articles and sites about fair trade and conscience consumerism. It seems like it would be a great way to keep things up-to-date and find relavent articles that suit people’s interest. So I found a clone of digg and tried to upload it. Turns out I can’t in a subdirectory so I went searching for a free webhost with mySql. No luck with that so two hours later I’m still where I started.

The idea still stands, but I’m going to have to wait till they update the web code before I can do it. Stay tuned.

Rent: Love and Life

I just saw a preview for the movie, Rent, which I had just seen for the first time last fall. Keane and I saw it on Broadway in New York. I’m not going to do a movie review or anything, but I did want to share a quick thought.

The catchy and great sounding main song, Seasons of Love, always brings to my mind the fragility of life and the importance of love. LOVE. If there is anything the gospel of Jesus teaches, it’s LOVE.

Writing for Geez Magazine

Though not to be confused with the popular rap artist, Young Jeezy, Geez Magazine is a little controversial.
It wasn’t until I received the first issue and started reading the Letters section that I realized the controversy of the title, Geez.

Using guttural language in connection with our Lord is not at all complimentary. In fact it is a cowardly and sinful act… Dan U. Dalke, Inman, Kansas

I had read this article, and thought Geez was just the word that we used growing up, not some attempt to blasphemy God. Needless to say I think they got some heads spinning.

I like Geez Magazine. Every article I’ve read so far has been thought provoking and to some degree challenging. I’d like to be a part of that, I’d like to write for Geez Magazine.
The problem is, I don’t know if I’m Geezy writing material. I don’t know if my style fits. I’m not quite sure where to start. I did write something and I’ll send it in, but it doesn’t have the sort of abstract flair that so much of the magazine is covered in. The stuff people read at a poetry gathering and everyone snaps their fingers. Any suggestions on me becoming a better writer?

Iconizing ourselves

At some point it’s going to become pretty normal to have a personal icon, just as most have a standard screen name/username these days. I decided I should come to a decision about what I’ll chose for a standard icon across multiple sites. Here are some current possiblities:

ariah and matt great B&W
in London
ariah climbing in Utah
ariah jumping on sand dune
in Mauritania Africa

a quickr pickr post

A small piece of internet fame

So, I was testing out google’s suggest feature and I realized this interesting bit of information:
me
(Search for Ariah Fine)

If you do the search you’ll find that the majority of those link to me in some way, shape or form. Call it what you will, I think it basically means there isn’t a good chance I’ll be able to hide myself from those on the internet.

That said, I wonder what implications something like this has. I don’t think there is much of a case for the internet paranoid these days. Those who don’t want any of their information to be online at all. There’s a good chance I can find something about you somewhere if I want to. Then it becomes a matter of personal space and privacy. I’m sort of open to the fact that anyone can read a lot of deep stuff about me.

Does this mean someone is more likely to stalk me? Not likely. I don’t know if I’m good stalking material anyways. What do you think?

Guest blogger: My dad.

I’m contemplating having my dad do some guest blog entries on here. I hope my small readership doesn’t mind. My family was in town for the weekend and I really enjoyed our time together. My dad and I always talk business ideas and this weekend was no exception. I told him I was thinking of starting to write about my research into all these online businesses, home businesses, make money quick schemes, and the rest. Then it occured to me, he knows a bit about all that too. Maybe he could guest blog a couple times a month and talk about what he’s found. Then maybe I’ll start him off on his own blog and folks who are interested can go over there and keep up on things.

What does everyone think? I sort of like the idea of an increased readership, and at the same time I like this being small enough that I can ask a question to all of you (whoever you are) and hope that I might get an actual response.

Already Forgotten?

Article Banner

Today, a day to celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. I wrote another article for Relevant Magazine concerning King’s legacy and it’s impact today. Read it here.

If upon reflecting on King and his legacy, you only naively rejoiced that his “dream” has been accomplished, but did not weep at the complacency of we the Church in carrying out the work that King, in Christ, called us to, you are deceived.

If you’ve come by this site after reading the article, please post a comment below just to say hi, I’d appreciate it.
