Since I’m not posting on a regular basis, due to writing my book, my video this week doesn’t have to fit into any particular category. So here is a few for you to enjoy.

Since I’m concentrating my writing efforts on this novel, I’m going to posts some quotes and links to articles and blog posts I highly recommend you check out through out this month.

I’m also considering doing a podcast about the novel I’m writing, let me know if you’d be interested in listening to that. I found that recording my thoughts on the story line helped me flesh it out a bit more. It might give away some of the details though.

However, It didn’t really relate to anything I’ve been talking about and I don’t have other videos to go along with it. YouTubesday: I Could Have Saved One More…

One of the most moving movie scenes ever, that has impacted my day to day life, is this scene from Schindler’s List.

The background (for the couple who haven’t scene it) is Schindler is a German businessman who has saves the lives of over a thousand Jews by employing them in his factories during the Holocaust. The clip is longer, but the first four minutes is the part I’d like you to watch.

Schindler, who did so much and is a hero to many, still has sincere regret about some of his lifestyle choices. Notice the Jews that come around him don’t discount his statements that he could have indeed saved more people by selling his lapel pin or car, but they don’t try and lay the guilt on either; they are grateful for those he did help.

We live in a world that is daily filled with tragic and unnecessary deaths. Thousands die from lack of access to food, basic health care, clean water, preventable diseases. These are deaths I can help prevent by choosing to put my resources towards providing for others needs, but so many times I don’t choose those things.

This is a reality that I struggle with often. I fear I might have the opportunity in this life or the next, to meet the child I sponsor and, like Schindler, I will breakdown and weep at how much more I could have done, how many more I could have helped, had I only been selfless enough to put their needs before mine.

YouTubesday: The Poor Will Always…

I attended the CCDA conference in St. Louis this past week (thus the brief blog hiatus). It was an incredible conference and a very encouraging experience. I didn’t do much in the way of notes and things, so I don’t have a lot to post for you. However, I did find some old CCDA video on youtube, and this one from Wayne Gordon is right on. It’s about the often misquoted passage, “The poor will always be among you.”
The video is 40+ minutes long, but just listen to the first five minutes and then decide if your sucked in or not. Verse references below. (also a few other old CCDA videos in the player below)

I think I might dub Tuesdays, ‘YouTubesdays,’ and post a video I’ve found interesting in the recent weeks. Today, I wanted to post some informational video about the current housing market. I couldn’t find anything more engaging and still informative then a basic interview, but I think you might find it interesting.I won’t really get into it here, but this current time period is one of the reason’s we think now is a good time to purchase a home.

The Shame Of The Nation By Jonathan Kozol

Keeping on the topic of education for a little bit, I thought I’d share a video with Jonathan Kozol, an amazing author who has for years tried to make known the inequalities of the public education system known. This 9 minute interview with Mr. Kozol helps give some quick insight and understanding to what his books discuss in further detail.

Why this Matters.
A lot of people, especially many in the church, applaud our country as being of ‘Land of Opportunity’ and we celebrate it’s freedom and equality. We are not however a country of free and equal opportunity. Our education system has been grossly unequal ever since the days of slavery, keeping and oppressing generations from ever having the opportunity to a fair chance at rising up. The Bible is filled with verses concerning justice from oppression, like in Isaiah:

10:1 Woe to those who make unjust laws,
to those who issue oppressive decrees,

2 to deprive the poor of their rights
and withhold justice from the oppressed of my people,

If you believe this is authoritative, then your church should be doing something about the injustice of the land that you live in. If you don’t believe the Bible as fact, then at least tuck this verse away to challenge Christians that you meet to actually follow the Bible they claim they follow.

Trading Schools: Still Savage Inequalities

I recently brought up the topic of schools and Kozol’s documenting of the inequality in the public schools in the USA. I understand that if you don’t read the stories or see the pictures and the facts yourself it can be hard to believe at times. So, with the help of Oprah, I bring you some insight into the public schools:
What are your thoughts? Does this disparity make a difference in the type and quality of education one receives? Is it fair?

Well, one thing I’ve done a lot more of lately is watching videos online. It’s about the most engaging thing to do late at night with a baby in one hand, the lights out and access to a mouse with the other. I’m finding video and the powers of technology are set to be an incredibly powerful tool in the years to come. Awareness can be raised about issues by anyone with access to a camera and a computer with the internet. I figure it would be nice for me to share some of the media I’ve come across, so you don’t have to waste your time browsing along. Possibly a weekly thing, I’ll try and post at least one or two videos I’ve come across that I found interesting and engaging. And, sometimes I’ll post one I just thought was funny. I might post some political bits, but just know, it’s only cause I found it interesting, not intending to brain wash you to one political side or the other, I don’t necessarily hold the same values or political leanings as the videos I’ll post links to. So, here’s a few for you to enjoy today.

Since we are advocates of breastfeeding around here, I thought this was an interesting PSA (Public Service Announcement) on the topic.

I’ve mentioned Shane Claiborne quite a few times on here recently, so maybe you won’t mind hearing him again. This video is actually put out by Zondervan, the publishers of Shane’s book and others. I’ll post some of their other videos later. For now I thought an audio piece of Shane’s book read by him might be worth a listen.
