Further Political Ponderings

Orwell-Politics by shibuiweb

I’m not really doing the ‘post once a week’ thing very well, so I do apologize. However, the last post had a nice 25 comment long discussion, so I appreciate everyone’s input. For the time being, I’m still asking political questions. We are basically being bombarded with this stuff and I can’t help but think about it. So, with that comes more and more questions. (and I just watched the vice-presidential debates, so there’s even more fodder for thought) [and it doesn’t help that I got a sneak viewing of Religulous the other night]

I guess what I’m really wondering right now, is what relevance all this political stuff has on me and my neighborhood. Not that it doesn’t have an impact, but I sort of wonder how different a Republican and Democratic administration is. I’ve only been really cognizient of anything political for the last maybe 6 years, so I don’t really have personal experience to make judgements on. And since most of the readers here are early 30’s or younger (speak up if your not!), I’m not sure this is the right audience to ask.

I know it’s all interlinked, our country, my neighborhood, international wars and local poverty. Lately, I’m not sure what to make of it. I’m trying to listen honestly and hear out both sides, and they both seem to think they are right and I just can’t make sense of it.

And like I’ve said before, my outlook is motivated by my understanding of trying to follow the teachings of Christ, which contrary to what any politician might say, I believe are the hope of the world. That being said, I’m willing to be pursuaded by anyone on the political or religious spectrum that can help me make sense of the political parties, or even the specific political candidates, in light of me trying to follow Christ’s teachings, and convince me who to vote for. No, my votes not for sale, I’m just trying to make sense of things…

  1. This is something one of my pastors said that I think is brilliant and true:

“All political systems fall short. The gospel is the only real answer to man’s dilemma.”

He goes on: “The two thieves of the gospel attempt to pull you away from the central truth of our need for God to rule over us as a benevolent dictator. The two thieves can be: democratic – republican; liberal – conservative; legalism – antinomianism; self-loathing – self-actualization; etc.”

  2. Okay, Ariah, I’m back. What specifically are you struggling with? I’m more than happy to talk this through with you. I love honest, heartfelt dialogue with other followers…especially in regard to “politics”…but I don’t wanna waste my time going on and on about whatever’s spinning around in *my* mind. Cause that doesn’t help YOU at all. Let’s discuss what you’re interested in…what’s ailing you the most about this vote and what issues are most important to YOU?

  3. As a fellow North Minneapolis resident, I wish all politicians spent a lot more time discussing OUR neighborhood. It feels like the metro area pretends like we don’t exist, unless it’s time for the crime report on the news. I was scouring everywhere for more information about the Willie Dominguez/Bobby Jo Champion primary for State House (I typically vote in Democratic primaries, though do not affiliate as one) … found very little. In that election yard signs did make a difference for me.

This discussion isn’t quite what you were looking for, but it’s one we need to have. Places like North Minneapolis are neglected in elections on most levels. We need to change that. I would be more open to voting for someone addressing concerns here than someone who represents the broad social views I identify with.

  4. I’ll answer Jamie first and then Erin…

Jamie, here’s whats happened. I’ve opened a listening ear to Republican folks I respect and have found myself stuck between to groups who both insist they are right, whether it’s the war, taxes or the national economy. I’m trying to figure out who I agree with more.
The issues really on my mind right now are abortion and the economy. Just not sure where I stand anymore…

@Erin: thank you SO much for joining in the discussion. I completely agree with you about the local political scene. I’ve been brainstorming ways to bring awareness and communication on these issues. I was wondering if there was a school board candidate debate and if not how I could facilitate one myself.
Any creative brainstorm ideas from a politically minded neighbor?
