I just watched a video of Bush talking about the situation in New Orleans on the BBC.
At the end he encourages all the people who want to help that what is most needed right now is money to the Red Cross and the Salvation Army. It struck me that in my conversation with a very conservative friend that this is exactly how he thinks this sort of thing should be done. No government forcing us to give our money, no forced benevolence.
I guess I just think maybe Bush should have done the same thing with the war in Iraq. You know, if there was a real need for more funds to support that effort, why didn’t Bush do a press conference and ask us to send our money?
To me it seems backwards. If we need to give money for the relief effort after Katrina then by all means take some of our tax dollars to do it. In my opinion, if you need money to relieve people in Sudan, SE Asia, Niger, and Iraq, please take billions and commit billions to care for the needs of those people. But please don’t take our money to buy bullets and missiles and land mines and kill people. Please don’t.
good point bro…
And all God’s people said
AMEN…
Of course, there has been millions of dollars of tax-payer money spent on cleaning up Katrina and taking care of those who are currently suffering because of her. After all, the thousands of National Guard troops who have deployed to the southeast, the Army Corps of Engineers, and the Federal Emergency Management Association are all funded through taxation.
President Bush was speaking to the millions of Americans who hoped to do more.
Asking citizens to make voluntary donations to supply our troops with armor, food, shelter, and the ammunition necessary to protect innocent Iraqis and themselves is a bad idea. Whether or not you agree with the war, there ought to be general consensus that soldiers deserve to be protected, fed, housed, and supplied with the tools they need to get home safely and quickly.
Yeah, I agree. Take my money to help people, please. And ask for donations for popular, yet controversial, actions.
For 1, why are we in Iraq anyways? The whole point was to find weapons of mass destruction and that ended up in….? 2. We are using ALLLLLLLLL that effort and money to build Iraq and for more weapons, and helping other countries build their defenses. Hm… U.S. could sure use all that effort and money. How many ghettos we got? How much crime do we have? How much poverty is there?….The U.S. to me could be a whole lot better place, if we spent more effort on US then others.
