I always get annoyed at our focus on holidays as seasons go by, so I thought I’d jump the gun and start talking about Christmas before anybody else!
I’ll leave black Friday alone, and ask that we all take a look at Christmas. We live in a very consumeristic culture, and we live on a “everybody else is doing it” mentality. Christmas is a prime example of this.
I’d like for you to think long and hard about the simple possiblity that Buying Nothing on the holidays this year might be an incredibly wise thing for you to do.
That’s all for now, I’ll leave you with a short little video interview talking about buy nothing Christmas.
oh my gosh. that woman made me so angry. she treated that interview like it was not worth her time, and the guy was a crazy radical. So if he is, ever think about the fact that he might be right?!!
I have to agree that Christmas gets waaaaaaaay too over commercialized. And we do tend to get away from what it’s really all about. And I find myself often giving in to this subtle temptation–esp. where my neice and nephew are concerned. See, Uncle Michael loves to spoil them…but there is too much of a good thing. And how many toys do they really need?
I also admit a few years ago, I couldn’t afford much in the way of holiday giving…and while I didn’t feel overly guilty about this, my ex-wife did..to the point that it became this huge sticking point in our relationship. I wanted to just explain to our family we couldn’t afford it having just got married and my not having a job but she felt that we couldn’t not get everyone something as it would appear rude. For me, it was more about spending time with those I love and remmebering why the season is specials and important….and I couldn’t get across the point that just cause we couldn’t afford a lot for people didn’t make us bad people.
I think we should spend christmas day celebrating love, friendship, and forget about spending a lot of money with gifts that aren’t really needed. You don’t have to give a gift to express your feelings of love and hapiness, try a simple hug and a true smile! If you really want to buy things, remember those people who really need it.
I THINK IT’S IMPOSSIBLE FOR ME, BECAUSE I’M A SHOPAHOLIC. I LOVE TO GIVE SMALL GIFTS TO MY FAMILY AND MY FRIENDS.
I believe that giving presents on Christmas is nota consumistact, but a sentimental demonstration.
