Get ready for an explosion
Okay, I’ve decided to start writing when ever things come to mind, instead of spacing this stuff out over days at a time (which many times means I forget what I was writing about).
For those of you subscribed, I apologize if this means far too much in your inbox. If your only interested in one or two categories, email me and I’ll help you keep updated on just those.
Also, I’d love for you to spread the word about any post or about my blog in general. Links back to here would be much appreciated.
I figured I’d try out a Tag Cloud form of Categories, as you can see over at the side. The Bigger the text the more post are in it. Hopefully I can make this a useful tool in the future.
For now enjoy.
Much love and peace.
Nashville Library Look-up
For all you Public Library addicts like me your gonna find this extremely useful. Are you ever looking for a book or dvd or something on Amazon.com and then go over to the Public Library to see if you can find it there and put it on hold?
Well someone went to the task of creating a LibraryLookup bookmarklet, such a brilliant idea.
For Nashville folks here’s all you have to do:
1. Drag this link into your bookmarks bar: LibraryLook-up
2. search on amazon.
3. When your on the item you want just click the bookmark and it should bring up the library page with that item on it, now you can see where it is or put it on hold!
For those in other cities and states, let me know if you want help doing this for yourself, or just go here and follow the steps.
Uncle Jiffy and Unbreakable plates
Before my uncle was an uncle, he was a fun kid.
One time my grandma had just bought some new dishware. She was raving about how these plates where “unbreakable” as the advertisement had stated.
“unbreakable, huh?” Jiffy had asked with doubt.
“yep.”
“okay.” And with that Jiffy took a plate and tossed it across the room where it landed with crash and shattered across the floor!
Uncle Jiffy died of AIDS 11 years ago, and I never got to know him that well, but that story has made me smile.
A story about My Uncle Jiffy
My uncle moved to Texas. He had lived in Chicago his whole life. As many folks who’ve made their way south have found out, there are some unpleasent critters that we don’t have many of up north: cockroaches.
My uncle was quite disgusted by them as many folks are and did what any smart person would do and called an Exterminator. The exterminator came and did a thorough spraying of his house. Then he asked my uncle when he would like to have his regularly schedule appoitments to continue spraying.
“Wait you mean I have to keep paying you to come back and do this?!?!”
“I’ll just live with them then!”
And that was that.
He would sneak into the kitchen in the morning and turn on the light and push as many cockroaches as he could down the sink before he started his breakfast.
When my aunt went to visit, he warned her to let him go into the bathroom first before she took a shower or anything.
I guess that made my uncle a frugal guy or something. Anyone who knows me knows that sounds like something I might do too.
I never really got to know my uncle. He died when I was in sixth grade. He died of AIDS.
Join me in a Pledge to buy a TerraPass
It’s time to get our Energy Conservation consciousness rolling. I’d like to introduce you to two websites.
TerraPass is an enviromental group dedicated to investing in Projects that reduce CO2.
Members of TerraPass our folks like me and you have recognized the fact that we are doing a lot of harm to our environment by driving around and we should probably take some interest and responsiblity to “restore the balance.” Basically you go to the website, calculate about how much CO2 your car produces a year, and then buy a membership (donate) enough money to invest in CO2 reducing projects equal to your cars output. I hope your conscience is tugging.
Now, I’m planning on doing this TerraPass thing, but I’d like others to join in with me. Enter PledgeBank. A dude in England started this and it’s pretty cool. Basically I’ve agreed to buy a TerraPass if 10 other people Pledge to do the same thing. If your gonna do it then click here and sign the pledge. Deal?
Ariah’s Cup.
Why I’m walking the AIDS walk
I haven’t done an event where I’m supposed to raise money before (at least not in my recent recollection). For some reason I felt the urge to have the AIDS walk be my first event. I like encouraging people to give money to good causes but it’s not often I actually ask for money myself (there was IsupportMeera). Here are a few of the reasons I’m encouraged to do the AIDS walk here in Nashville and why I hope you might consider sponsoring me.
I became aware of the AIDS pandemic in the world shortly before college. Seeing the statistics and reading about the lack of resources to address the problem, I grew increasingly interested in helping. It seemed AIDS in the USA had gone from a hot topic and serious concern, to almost off the radar screen of our media. I think this was due to the drugs created that helped inhibit the onset of the virus and helped those with HIV lead fairly healthy lives. But as news in the USA decreased, slowly I was beginning to hear about how quick the virus was spreading overseas. We didn’t respond fast enough. There is quite a charge to deal with AIDS globally, with the much supported ONE campaign lead by, U2 singer, Bono. We need to keep AIDS in the forefront of our minds, we cannot forget our global neighbors.
After moving to Nashville I quickly was made aware of the major change in the state health care program, TennCare. Starting August 1st about 300,000 people where cut off from their health care access and many where seriously reduced in their prescription options. If you know about AIDS treatment at all you know that you NEED to take a number of treatments at once (a cocktail); and you NEED to take them consistently. And if you get sick at all you need to go see a doctor. Well those suffering from AIDS who where cut or reduced from TennCare are in a terrible situation. Joining the AIDS walk will help raise crucial funds for meeting the needs of those with AIDS in Nashville.
Finally, there is a personal note to this. When I was in sixth grade my uncle died. He lived in Texas (we lived in Wisconsin) and at some point he got really sick and my dad flew down to be there with him. He seemed to young and healthy to just get sick and die like that, and for a long time it remained a mystery in my mind (though, I guess my parents told me). I sort of put the clues together as I got older and after graduating high school I asked my dad about Uncle Jiffy. He died from AIDS. I always wish I had been able to know him better. The more stories I hear about him, the more I wish I had the opportunity to know him better while he was alive. I’ve never done anything to really honor my uncle, I’ve never really outwardly acknowledged his dying of AIDS. I love my uncle and I miss him.
This AIDS Walk is in honor of my Uncle Jiffy.
The Fine’s second podcast
Warning: This is a dumb podcast. If you don’t know us, or aren’t a friend of ours from Wheaton, you probably don’t want to waste your time listening to this. And if your from Wheaton it’s probably not worth it either.
