Thanks for this link…good stuff. Lori and I have been talking about the pros and cons about renting versus buying lately. We aren’t close to being able to buy, but plan to be in KC for a while and thought maybe saving for a down payment would be wise. But, I’m not convinced that buying is all that great yet. I never really compared the return in real estate compared to investing, but its an important thing to look at. Also, if I want to live in the city, especially parts of the city that might not have the best home values, I might be able to buy cheap, but after spending just a little bit of money in renovating I might surpass the value of the home very quickly. Home prices don’t rise as fast in the inner city as they do in other communities.

    Ben,
Glad your thinking this through too. I’m with you that Real estate might not be all it’s cracked up to be. At the same time, the reason we’ve decided to pursue it is because once we own the home, we no longer have to pay rent to anyone, it’s ours. And even when we are still paying the bank we have the freedom to fix it up more, add a garden, compost, major energy efficiency changes, etc. Not saying those are necessities, but those are some of the reasons we are pursuing it.
