A documentary, what do you think of it?

29 August 2006 4 Comments

So, it looks like a very well made and well supported documentary is coming out. It’s something I’m not sure I feel comfortable with it being in the limelight.

I’m really curious what everyone’s thoughts are on this video. It seems there are a lot of issues “Christians” need to deal with in house and amongst one another, instead of waiting until a video like this comes out that cast the whole bunch in a negative light.

I’m saying all this cause I know of people that already feel like Christians (i.e. ALL Christians) and a documentary like this will just confirm that.

So here’s my two questions. How representative is that really? I’ve known a good number of people who would wear the “fundamentalist” label (which I don’t) proudly who would see what the video is portraying as dangerous and overzealous.

And how many people involved in that group really are thinking of aggressive, physical violence against other people as opposed to say “waring against spiritual powers through prayer” and dying a martyr’s death for sharing their faith in a restrictive nation?

You and I both know that photography and video are very susceptible to the editor’s interpretation of a situation. What scares me just as much as a video like this is the polarization videos like this perpetuate, making almost no way for us to move towards more moderation with the extremists who do exist. Sadly, extremism and misrepresentation aren’t the sole dominion of any one side of many of these issues.

I used to live this type of feverish evangelical tradition. I even went through having the ‘demons of homosexuality’ cast out of me in a healing service. I see that distant past through a surreal lens now. I’ve rejected those beliefs and am trying to find some healing in my life now. I’m generally in an OK place, but every day I wish I had never brushed against Christianity. I wish I had grown up unchurched.

One thing I observed about those who believe they ‘know’ the answer… folks who believe one class of people will spend eternity in hell, you tend to have little regard for them while they are ‘here on earth’. Policies and practices that marginalize non-believers, real or perceived, are easy to justify to folks who feel they are going to hell anyway.

I hated monotheistic religion for a good many years. Today I just fear it.

I feel like I recognize scenes from this video from my own camp experiences as a kid. However, the trailer disturbs me greatly. I’ll have to catch a screening and process my thinking on my blog, later. But, for now, I’m both horrified and compelled.

    And embarrased.
